International Marine Biodiversity Conference: Minister Pledges Action to Tackle Pollution and Protect Livelihoods
On April 29, in Pakistan, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, who serves as the Provincial Minister for Energy, Development, and Planning in Sindh, emphasized the importance of protecting the sea from contamination to prevent widespread joblessness and mitigate potential socio-economic damages. To address this issue, the Sindh government has implemented stringent actions, including a strict ban on releasing unprocessed sewage water into the ocean.
At the opening ceremony for the "International Conference on Marine Biodiversity: Social, Environmental Dimensions, and Technological Innovations," which took place at the University of Karachi, he shared his perspectives. Those present included Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee Professor Dr. Solhha Rehman, Secretary Dr. Faisal Afridi, along with numerous local and international specialists.
Syed Nasir Hussain Shah highlighted the Sindh government’s dedication to safeguarding the marine ecosystem and fostering sustainable practices through multiple robust initiatives aimed at tackling different issues. Stringent rules concerning industrial effluents into the sea off Sindh’s shores are rigorously implemented, ensuring proper oversight of pollutants discharged from industries around Karachi. The Energy Minister mentioned that they have started community-driven fishing projects in regions such as Thatta and Badin alongside local fisherfolk. He recognized the critical role of mangroves in shielding shorelines and declared that substantial funds are being allocated toward restoring and conserving these vital plants. In partnership with global entities, the Sindh Forest Department has successfully grown millions of young mangrove trees across the Indus Delta, boosting shoreline protection and offering habitats for aquatic creatures while setting up Marine Protected Zones.
Minister Nasir Shah showed his belief that this conference will be essential in safeguarding the existence and protection of water creatures, thus aiding in building a more sustainable tomorrow for oceanic environments. He guaranteed that the Sindh government will work towards putting into practice any advice provided by specialists during the event.
He added that since he heads the Planning and Development Ministry, any robust and implementable projects suggested during the conference might be incorporated into the next fiscal year’s budget.
