AI and Digitization Pledge: NSITF Commits to Safeguarding Workplaces This World Health/Safety Day

To commemorate the 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has made an audacious commitment to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) and expedite digital transformation efforts. This move aims to transform workplace health and safety protocols throughout Nigeria.

At the commemorative ceremony held in Abuja on Monday, Barrister Falaye Oluwaseun, the MD of NSITF—who was present through a representative, Mr. Adedeji Adegoke, the Executive Director of Finance and Investment—stressed during his speech that "safety is non-negotiable," highlighting the organization's steadfast dedication to safeguarding Nigeria's labor force.

This year’s theme, 'Transforming Health and Safety: The Impact of AI and Digitization in the Workplace,' resonates deeply with our shared responsibility to create safer, more intelligent, and robust work environments in Nigeria.

Barrister Oluwaseun emphasized the profound impact of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital sensors, and big data analytics in transforming contemporary occupational health and safety regulations. He remarked, "These advancements are safeguarding lives, reducing accidents, and reinstating respect for labor." Furthermore, he noted that these technological developments harmoniously support the NSITF's core objectives of preventing hazards, ensuring security, and boosting efficiency.

However, while championing AI, the NSITF Managing Director acknowledged that Nigeria’s digitization journey in workplace safety is ongoing. “For AI, we are not yet there. The fact is that our digitization process is ongoing,” he clarified. “We are doing our best to digitize our operations to ensure that health, safety, and compensations are all-encompassing. Within the next months, our digitization process will likely come to fruition.”

He emphasized that although technology offers potent instruments, human oversight stays indispensable. "The key lies in individuals who are well-informed, capable, and supported," noted Oluwaseun, commending HSE officials as "the unsung champions ensuring safety across manufacturing plants, building sites, office spaces, medical facilities, and every workplace."

This occasion acted as a strong signal to all participants within the system. Business leaders were prompted to "adopt digital health and safety tools" and progress from basic adherence to fostering an ingrained safety mindset. Workers were motivated to engage proactively in educational programs and utilize technological resources to safeguard both themselves and their colleagues. Trade organizations were requested to keep pushing for more intelligent, technologically-supported work environments, whereas government officials were advised to boost cooperation efforts and improve funding distribution.

The transformation is digital. The transformation is smart. The transformation is happening now," Oluwaseun proclaimed, urging various sectors to come together in shaping a future where safe workplaces are standard, with technology being used wisely to protect workers' well-being.

He further emphasized that NSITF’s dedication marks a considerable change in focusing on both innovation and human-centric approaches within occupational health and safety measures.
