Trump Cranks Up Tariffs on China to 125%: New Spike in Trade War Intensifies Tensions

April 9, 2025 — US President Donald Trump declared his intention to increase tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%, intensifying the ongoing trade conflict.

This action comes shortly after Beijing announced an 84 percent punitive tariff on American products, set to take effect from April 10, 2025, as the worldwide trade conflict escalates.

"In light of China's disregard for global market norms, I have decided to increase the tariff imposed on Chinese goods by the United States of America to 125%, effective right away," Trump stated on Truth Social.

China's Ministry of Finance responded, stating: "The United States' action of increasing tariffs on China is an error compounded by another error. This severely violates China’s rightful benefits and considerably undermines the rule-based multilateral trading system."

Trump's "Liberation Day" duties kicked in just after midnight Wednesday, imposing a total tariff rate of 104 percent against China.

According to an official announcement, China’s plans to increase its tariff rates will go into effect just after midnight on Thursday.

Beijing responded at first by matching Trump's 34 percent "reciprocal" tariffs last week and declared on Tuesday that they would “fight until the end” should the administration continue imposing these duties.
