Trade Minister Tours Olam Agri Wheat-Milling Plant in Kpone: Exclusive International Insight
On Friday, April 4th, 2025, Olam Agri, a prominent player in the nation’s agribusiness and food sector, welcomed the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, to its flour mill located in Kpone.
This visit is a continuation of the ministry’s continuous interaction with local producers. It gave Olam Agri the chance to talk about how the company supports the food sector and aligns with the nation’s objectives for industrial growth.
Mrs Ofosu-Adjare and her team had discussions with the leadership and employees at Olam Agri during their visit, focusing on the firm's key investments in Ghana, employment opportunities generated, as well as its backing of the nation’s initiative towards a round-the-clock economic environment.
In her speech, the minister praised Olam Agri for their dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of their workforce.
"I'm here at Olam Agri today as they play a crucial role in the agricultural sector within this nation. What I've observed thus far has left me quite impressed. Upon visiting any facility, my initial focus is always the working conditions—how safe and secure they are for the staff. In this regard, I believe they have met the necessary standards," stated Ofosu-Adjare.
She mentioned, "An economy tends to flourish when there's import substitution – and if we focus on exports, this reduces pressure on our currency, leading to a stronger cedi. It seems like Olam Agri is addressing all of these points."
Baibhav Biswas, who leads Olam Agri as Country Head for Ghana, highlighted the company's dedication to fostering the country’s economic growth via swift expansion and employment generation.
"Ghana has consistently showcased itself as a major investment prospect. Our company boasts more than 1,500 committed staff members in Ghana who have played a crucial role in our expansion through their expertise and commitment. Our objective is to develop alongside Ghana, rather than merely within its borders," he stated.
During her visit, the minister along with her group visited the firm’s grinding plant, which manufactures well-known flours such as First Choice, Royal Gold, Adepa, and Vital, aiming to oversee the manufacturing procedures.
The minister along with her group seized this chance to check on the advancement of the building project for Olam Agri’s latest high-tech pasta manufacturing facility.
"This pasta facility is designed to address the increasing demand for pasta items in the marketplace. Our objective is to substantially decrease the nation’s dependence on imported pasta, thereby boosting local trade and promoting self-sufficiency through import substitution. Additionally, we have modernized our milling operations to handle high-quality wheat domestically, which will lead to improved quality management and greater economic efficiency," explained Baibhav.
The agriculture minister also showed gratitude towards Olam Agri for their impact on Ghana’s economy and restated the government’s dedication to backing the food sector in Ghana with the aim of achieving self-sufficiency.
In the last three decades, Olam Agri has expanded into one of the foremost agribusinesses and food companies in the nation, catering to the increasing demands of Ghanaian consumers. The introduction of their advanced wheat milling plant in 2012 significantly enhanced Ghana’s ability to produce wheat flour independently.
