UNILAG Launches Digital Entrepreneurship School: Empowering the Next Generation

The University of Lagos has initiated its first spring school focused on digital entrepreneurship and digital cultures, with the aim of fostering employment and wealth generation through technological advancements.

According to an institutional announcement, this initiative seeks to reshape the function of the knowledge sector in promoting technology-driven advancements in human capital development.

Prof Tunde Ope-Davies, who leads the Centre for Digital Humanities at UNILAG and organized the event, emphasized that this effort is part of the university's commitment to fostering socio-economic progress and advancing the digital economy within Nigeria.

Davies stated, "The Spring School dedicated to digital entrepreneurship will emphasize acquiring tech-driven skills and fostering human capital growth among graduates and researchers from humanities and social science disciplines."

As a yearly occurrence from now on, we aim to educate thousands of graduates over the coming years. This initiative will expand the number of technically skilled professionals who can have a positive effect on the landscape of our digital economy.

He emphasized that this initiative demonstrated UNILAG’s dedication to promoting innovation, supporting young people, and stimulating economic development in the digital era.

In today’s swiftly changing worldwide environment, the Spring School in Digital Entrepreneurship aims to provide new graduates and aspiring professional entrepreneurs with crucial skills, knowledge, and mental frameworks necessary for success in the technology-focused workspaces and digital economies of the 21st century.

We aren’t merely instructing students on how to develop digitally based enterprises; rather, we’re fostering an innovative spirit along with traits of resilience and flexibility.

The objective is to equip participants with the ability to create groundbreaking technology-driven sustainable business concepts, improve their technological abilities, and establish thriving enterprises. Additionally, we aim to prepare them to be effective future leaders who can foster positive transformation within their communities and broader society," he noted.

The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Femi Hamzat, will preside over the inaugural event happening today. The keynote address will be delivered by Tim Akano, CEO of New Horizons Ltd.

The Spring School which commenced on Monday will run for one week till Saturday with the Faculty of Arts serving as the venue for the workshops and panel discussions.

This program focuses on e-commerce and the growth of online businesses: establishing and expanding thriving virtual enterprises; utilizing data analytics and crafting digital strategies; using information to guide knowledgeable business choices.

Other participants are focusing on coding and introductory app development; establishing the groundwork for crafting digital products along with exploring funding and investment strategies; charting the course through the financial ecosystem for new ventures.

The Spring School welcomes postgraduate students, new graduates, and budding entrepreneurs from Nigeria and other countries around the world.

At the event held on Monday, the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola highlighted that this initiative is aligned with her administration’s focus on preparing for the future. She emphasized the importance of harnessing the synergy between the academic community and local industries to foster human resource development and encourage innovative practices.

The VC emphasized that the program will include a mix of presentations, practical workshops, guidance from mentors, and analyses of actual business scenarios. These components will be led by both accomplished foreign and domestic educators as well as veteran professionals and thriving startup founders.
